Six experiments

The VELUX Group has launched the project Model Home 2020. It is our vision for cli-mate-neutral buildings with a high level of livability. This is part of a VELUX strategy to take an active part in developing sustain-able buildings – the buildings of the future. The vision and principles behind Model Home 2020 need to be developed and tested; so from 2008 to 2010, we will build six full-scale experimental demo-houses.

They will all reflect and respond to three main principles – efficient energy design, high degree of livability and minimum climate impact – as well as the different climatic, cultural and architectural conditions of the countries in which they are built.

Our philosophy is that one experiment is better than a thousand expert views

The six experiments will be placed at six different locations in five countries. The houses will be open to the public for 6-12 months after completion, after which time they will be sold below the market price. In return, we will continue to monitor the experiments with the new residents in order to learn how the buildings perform in real life conditions.

By the end of 2009, the houses in Denmark (Copenhagen and Aarhus), will have been built with those in the UK, Germany, Austria and France following in 2010. The two ex-periments in Denmark will be built as a partnership between the VELUX Group and VELFAC. Each house will also have a number of local and regional partners, sup-pliers, architects, engineers and researchers.
