VELUX windows powered by offshore wind and solar energy

By 2020, the carbon footprint of the production of VELUX windows will be only half of what it used to be back in 2007, when the goal to reduce CO2 emissions was set up. To achieve this goal requires changes to the way we produce our products. Therefore, we invest in improving energy efficiency at the factories and in extensive use of renewable energy sources like solar and biomass. In 2017, we decided to increase the use of green electricity produced at offshore wind farms.

Besides our focus on improving energy efficiency and on-site production of renewables at our own sites, we have decided to acquire wind power certificates from the Danish energy company Ørsted to reach our CO2 saving targets.

In 2018, an estimated 14% of the electricity used at VELUX sites will come from offshore wind farms supplied by Ørsted, the world’s largest developer and operator of offshore wind.

The green electricity has Guarantee of Origin (GO) certification. This means that Ørsted guarantees that the electricity purchased by the VELUX Group comes come offshore wind farms in Europe.

By purchasing the Offshore Wind Certificates from Ørsted we support the continued investment in new offshore wind projects. This long-term perspective on expanding the pool of green energy sources fits the business philosophy of the VELUX Group to support a lasting shift towards sustainable development.

In March 2017, a large solar farm at the VELUX production facilities in Greenwood, South Carolina, was activated and tied to the local power grid. The 2.4 hectare solar farm supplies four buildings at the VELUX campus with solar power.

The VELUX Group is a company that has always been concerned with the environment. We have taken every action possible to be an environmentally sustainable company. The solar power plant at our site will take us a significant step forward in our efforts to reduce our impact on the environment.
