Decarbonising logistics: Danish Freight Decarbonisation Network

PUBLISHED: 27TH SEPTEMBER, 2024

Driving meaningful change

Harnessing the expertise, experience, and innovative capabilities of logistics professionals at member companies, the network is uniquely positioned to drive the decarbonisation agenda for logistics. Together, we aim to accelerate decarbonisation, tackle scope 3 emissions, and help get our planet back on track.

The logistics sector is in the midst of a transformative shift towards sustainability, with decarbonisation at the forefront. The logistics sector accounts for approximately 5-7% of scope 3 emissions for the VELUX Group, so investing time and resources in making meaningful changes can accelerate our collective move towards a greener future.

Enter the Danish Freight Decarbonisation Network, an exciting new initiative founded by the VELUX Group, The LEGO Group, and Danfoss. This network is dedicated to making a significant impact on decarbonising transportation for the nation's larger companies.

What are scope 3 emissions?

Scope 3 emissions are the indirect greenhouse gas emissions that occur in a company’s value chain, both upstream and downstream. These emissions often constitute the majority of a company’s total emissions, making them crucial for carbon footprint reduction efforts. For the logistics function at the VELUX Group, this includes emissions from such activities as the shipping of raw materials to manufacturing sites, transport of finished products to distribution centres, and transport of our products to customers.

Senior Program Manager, Nadia Møllebjerg, the VELUX Group representative in Danish Freight Decarbonisation Network, couldn't be more excited about the initiative. "Gathering so many of Denmark’s large companies in the network ensures that we can make substantial strides in reducing emissions," said Nadia. "By inspiring each other and leading the way, we can hopefully create a ripple effect, encouraging other companies to adopt similar best practices, amplifying the overall impact on decarbonisation."

Freight Project Manager & ESG Lead at Danfoss, Kasper Noes, represents Danfoss in the Danish Freight Decarbonisation Network. He comments: “The remarkable aspect of this network is that it is member-driven, providing us with a platform to collaborate with colleagues in the same field across different companies. We are confident that this network will bring valuable insights on how we can reduce our emissions.”

The first official meeting of the network was held at the end of September 2024.

BayWa 2024 Update

In 2022, the VELUX Group signed two new virtual power purchase agreements with BayWa r.e. that will drive the development of two new solar (photovoltaic) PV parks in southern Spain. The solar plants will generate 167 GWh of renewable electricity annually. That is enough power to cover all the VELUX Group’s European operations today - and several years ahead - and it constitutes about 90% of our current global electricity consumption. Enabling new solar plants is part of our work to achieve 100% renewable electricity and will help us reach the emissions reduction target for our global operations by 2030.
