The owners of this property originally built it as a bungalow, but as the family grew they decided to add some additional space to create their own private area in the previously unused loft by doing a loft conversion.

They employed a specialist loft conversion company, who visited to undertake a feasibility study for the conversion. The loft in its current state was unusable, but they determined that by restructuring the truss design and upgrading the level of insulation the area could be converted to useable living space.

In order to bring maximum light into the space the contractor recommended using large roof windows, and venetian blinds to provide control over the level of light when using the room for work.

Two openings were created in the floor. One for the stairs, and one for a mezzanine balcony looking down into the living room below. This provides additional light to the lower floor and a dramatic feature which showcases the full volume of the house. A glass balustrade was used to ensure that light spread effectively.

In the bedroom, roof windows were fitted on either side of the roof to provide cross ventilation and a good spread of light. Electric blinds are used to provide a blackout effect at night.

With the remaining floor space in the loft, a spacious dressing room has been incorporated, so that no free standing storage was required in the bedroom after the loft conversion.

The house extension of the Dreyer-Søndergaard family house included the installation of VELUX roof windows, sun tunnels and thermal solar collectors with replacement of the roof. 

This yellow brick house in a suburb north of Copenhagen was built in 1928. The Dreyer-Søndergaard family bought the house in 2010. Located on a quiet residential street and surrounded by a large garden with fruit trees, the house was a perfect home for a young family of mother and father and two children, aged three and six.

The residents are a busy family with both parents working outside the home, so solutions in the home need to be efficient, time saving and easy to operate. In the rebuilt house, a number of energy-saving technologies enable the family to reduce their costs while keeping the indoor climate comfortable and healthy.

The VELUX architects saw the roof replacement as an opportunity to add new qualities to the house. By installing twelve roof windows in the attic and two sun tunnels in the entrance area, daylight and natural ventilation could transform the damp and dark building into a comfortable and healthy home.

As part of the rebuilding of the Dreyer-Søndergaard family home, roof windows with remote control were installed, allowing the family to open all the windows at the same time. Sensors ensure the windows are closed automatically in the event of rain. “If I need to open all the windows simultaneously, in order to air out our home, the remote control is very practical,” explains Anders.

The VELUX ACTIVE climate control products ensure the house is never overheated in the warm season, and that energy consumption is kept to a minimum in the heating season. VELUX ACTIVE consists of a range of exterior awning blinds and interior sun screening  products. Apart from contributing to a good indoor climate, they also improve the atmosphere in the house: “I like it in the afternoon. When the awning blinds are down there is a soft light in the bedrooms. It feels very pleasant,” says Malene Dreyer.

This property was originally a small flat over one level with a large uninhabited loft space. The owners had a plan to convert the loft space, and create a dramatic double height space filled with light to act as the main living space
 
The loft space, previously accessed via a small hatch, offered a substantial amount of additional living space. Rather than separate the public floor into individual rooms, the owners were keen to create a large open space. The kitchen and living room form the lower area.
 
A multitude of storage is provided by the large feature floor to ceiling bookshelf and clever storage compartments in the stairs.
 
The white colour scheme, chosen to reflect the light, is broken up with touches of colour such as the pink light fitting in the kitchen.
 
Additional light from above is provided in this area by the roof windows. A white window was chosen so that they would blend into the ceiling, and the glass walkway which provides access to the first floor accommodation means that the light can cascade freely into the room below.
 
The layout of the bathroom has been carefully thought out, incorporating a bath under the eaves and a shower, closer to the centre of the loft where headroom is more abundant.
 
In the bedroom, the eaves space is effectively utilised with storage space. The roof windows offer a view of the sky and a large amount of light throughout the day.
