About the VELUX Group

For more than 80 years, the VELUX Group has created better indoor environments by bringing daylight and fresh air into homes and other buildings all over the world. The VELUX Group was founded in Denmark and is today an international company with a presence in 37 countries.

"The most important prerequisite for all life and work is light."

- VELUX Founder Villum Kann Rasmussen

Our purpose

The VELUX Group's purpose is: To create well-being for people and planet by transforming spaces using daylight and fresh air.It clarifies our intent and ambition to improve indoor environments.

To ‘create well-being’, in the broadest sense, is why we exist. That means health to people, but it also means creating compelling and desirable indoor spaces where people can comfortably live, work and play.

‘People and planet’ honours our commitment to sustainability, and ‘daylight and fresh air’ captures the most important aspects of the value we deliver to our customers.

Creating bright spaces since 1941

The VELUX story began in 1941 with our founder Villum Kann Rasmussen’s simple idea of transforming unused dark attics into bright liveable spaces filled with daylight and fresh air.

Our distinctive name is a combination of ‘VE’, short for ventilation and ‘LUX’, Latin for light – VELUX. Our founder’s innovative vision took VELUX from a single order for 12 roof windows for a school in Denmark - Slagelse Vestre Skole - to one of the world’s most renowned suppliers of building materials with manufacturing and sales operations in 37 countries.

"A Model Company works with solutions useful to society and treats its customers, partners, employees of all categories, shareholders and the planet better than most other companies. A Model Company makes a profit which can finance growth and maintain financial independence."

- VELUX Founder Villum Kann Rasmussen, 1965

The Model Company Objective

The way we do business is aptly defined in our Model Company Objective, which our founder Villum Kann Rasmussen formulated in 1965.

With the Model Company Objective, we look at success in the eyes of those we serve and depend on as the starting point. It’s a strive to continuously do a better job towards all stakeholder groups and it guides how we respectfully engage with the people we work with. It sets the direction for how we responsibly work with scarce natural resources, and it defines how we give back to the societies we operate in.

Finally, by Model Company, we mean a company working with solutions that are useful to society. Our solutions, which provide natural light and fresh air through the roof help create healthy, comfortable and enjoyable indoor environments for millions of people living, playing and working under the roof.

Healthy buildings focus

At the VELUX Group, we wish to lead the change towards healthier and more sustainable buildings. We believe that a healthy and sustainable home must be designed for people, for increased energy efficiency and with respect for the environment.

As a starting point, we focus on existing building legislation, scientific knowledge and established external standards, such as LEED and DGNB, and expand on this based on our many years of expertise.
