A historic semi-detached house

The children have fled the nest, and it’s too big for just one person: The owner of this historic semi-detached house had considered selling her house several times - until one of her grown-up daughters decided to move back home.

Roof windows provide light, air and views

A small space has been turned into a cosy feel-good corner that's perfect for relaxing. The women created the necessary space for stress-free living together by expanding the old warehouse: with the help of an architect and a small budget, the lumber room became a cosy oasis of well-being under the roof.

Main benefits of getting VELUX roof windows

  1. More space: They asked their builders to install four VELUX roof windows, two small centre pivot and two larger top hung roof windows, as this would cover 15-20% of the room’s floor space, ensuring the perfect amount of daylight in the loft.

  2. Light, air and view: Roof windows let in much more daylight than horizontal glazing of the same size.

  3. Improved room climate: All windows have been equipped with electric outdoor blinds which, in summer, make rooms noticeably cooler and provide much better thermal insulation in winter.

Architect

There are a lot of unused attic spaces hidden away in our portfolio of old properties; in a relatively short period of time and with manageable effort, these lofts can be transformed into homey havens with amazing views.

The perfect amount of daylight

"I can’t believe what was once essentially just storage space is now a fully functioning extra floor of our house.” Soon their big house with large corner garden was running out of space. Moving to a bigger house wasn’t an option – it would be too expensive, stressful and they loved the area they were in. Instead, Lucy and Matt (homeowners) made the decision to convert their loft, adding another floor to the house. This gave them another bedroom, additional bathroom and walk in wardrobe. After all, they had spent years renovating the house from top to bottom including adding a rear extension in 2015 and decorating all the rooms to make it special and homely. Adding more space to the home they loved made sense.”

Brighter rooms and better views

A newly created floor under the roof with bright rooms and amazing views is not created merely by increasing the square footage, but by adding large roof windows. Modern roof windows offer the builder great options: A bright room with a view of the outdoors looks larger. We get the impression that it is much larger in size than it really is.
